My father is Dominican and my mother is Honduran. For as long as I can remember I have always dreamt of traveling to the “home lands.” I wanted to gain a deeper appreciation for my parents in seeing where they grew ups while also appreciating the beauty of my roots. This is why Cuba was so special for me. Cuba was my first time leaving the country, my first time on a plane, and my first time being completely immersed in a culture like my own.
My experience in Cuba itself was amazing. We could not have chosen a better time to visit Cuba. The weather throughout our stay was gorgeous: sunny skies paired with a light breeze. Being a native speaker definitely gave me an advantage. I was able to understand locals, learn tongue twisters, and order my own food. However, I think what I will always remember from this trip is the bigger things that characterize Cuba. I will remember the colorful buildings that line the streets of Havana, the kindest of the strangers in the city, the liveliness of the elderly, the stories of those in the churches, the swing of salsa dancing, and the delicious rice and beans. I will remember buying things from merchants, the beautiful beach in Cienfuegos, and how lucky I am to have gone to Cuba.
These days it seems like half of my camera roll is filled with photos of Cuba! Here's some of my favorites.
